Summer is in full swing, and for many that means it’s time to head to the beach. Judging from this picture, it looks like Goofy is no exception. Dressed in his swimsuit with a surfboard at hand, this statue can be found at Disney’s Pop Century Resort between the 60’s and 70’s sections not far from the “Everything POP” food court. While the likes of The Beach Boys and Frankie and Annette made surfing a national pop culture craze in the 1960’s, Goofy was a bit ahead of the curve, hitting the wave for the first time back in the 30’s.
In the 1937 animated short “Hawaiian Holiday,” Mickey Mouse and the whole gang enjoy a day on the beach at Waikiki. Goofy used this opportunity to try his hand at surfing, but as hard as he tried throughout the cartoon, he never quite got the hang of it. In fact, every time he tried to hit the waves, the waves hit back. Maybe The Goof’s surfing skills have improved all these years after that first attempt, but, Goofy being Goofy, I would unfortunately doubt that.
