Universal Orlando’s new Volcano Bay water park may feature some pretty impressive new attractions, but visitors at the neighboring Universal’s Islands of Adventure can also find some monumental water thrills in that park’s Toon Lagoon. While the 75-foot drop finale may be the main draw for many guests, fans of Jay Ward’s 1960’s classic “The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show” will get an especially big kick out of “Dudley Do-Right’s Ripsaw Falls.” This flume ride is based on the program’s “Dudley Do-Right of the Mounties” segment, a parody of silent melodramas in which the heroic but clueless Dudley attempts to foil the schemes of the dastardly Snidely Whiplash. Jay Ward’s shows were well known for their rapid-fire assortment of witty humor, bad puns, and cultural references, and all of these attributes are on full display at “Ripsaw Falls.” One of its most predominant landmarks is an explosive reinterpretation of Mount Rushmore featuring Dudley, his leading lady Nell Fenwick, and other characters from the show in place of the presidents.
Because “Dudley Do-Right’s Ripsaw Falls” opened over thirty years after “Rocky and Bullwinkle” went off the air, unfortunately many of those responsible for creating the show did not live to see the theme park attraction it inspired. However, June Foray, who provided the voice for a number of major characters including Rocky and Natasha, was able to participate in its creation by reprising her role as Nell Fenwick for the attraction’s soundtrack. In addition to her work on “Rocky and Bullwinkle,” the legendary Foray, who will turn 100 later this year, is also known by generations of fans for her work as Granny and Witch Hazel in classic “Looney Tunes” shorts, Cindy Lou Who in the original “Dr. Seuss’ How The Grinch Stole Christmas” television special, Jokey Smurf in “The Smurfs,” Magica Da Spell in “DuckTales,” and Grandma Fa in “Mulan.” Lovingly combining the wackiness of Jay Ward’s characters with the type of thrills Universal Orlando in known for, “Dudley Do-Right’s Ripsaw Falls” really makes a big splash in Island of Adventure’s Toon Lagoon.
