As you exit “Muppet*Vision 3D at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, the first thing you encounter is a pretty typical sight upon finishing a Disney attraction: a gift shop. However, the typical often gets transformed into the strange and bizarre whenever the Muppets are involved, and there’s arguably no Muppet stranger or more bizarre than Gonzo the Great. One of the ways that Gonzo has left his mark (literally) on “Stage 1 Company Store” can be found on the shop’s exterior, where his distinct silhouette can be seen imprinted on a somewhat sloppy paint job. In the grand scheme of things, though, a painting mishap is among the tamer outcomes of Gonzo’s outlandish artistic endeavors over the years.
As the resident performance artist and daredevil on “The Muppet Show,” Gonzo has done a lot of strange things in the name of his “art.” Among these acts have included eating a rubber tire to the music of “Flight of the Bumblebee,” wrestling a brick, catching a cannonball in his bare hand, and reading the poetry of Percy Bysshe Shelly while (and at the same time) defusing a bomb. Such stunts weren’t only restricted to the small screen, with Gonzo being thrown out of an airplane in “The Great Muppet Caper,” attempting an outlandish water ski stunt accompanied by chickens clucking the “William Tell Overture” in “The Muppets Take Manhattan,” and holding a disastrous “indoor running-of-the-bulls” with Selma Hayek in “Muppets Most Wanted.” The only thing predicable about Gonzo the Great is that you never know just what he’ll do next.
