The Muppet Chickens Flock Together in Liberty Square

The Muppets are comprised of all sorts of weird and unusual characters and creatures, but even something as common as a chicken can stand out among this colorful cast if they have the right act. For over four decades, a flock of nearly-identical hens have musically clucked and squawked their way through practically ever project that Kermit the Frog and company have put on. This includes their live appearance in “The Muppets Present… Great Moments in American History,” which is presented daily in Magic Kingdom’s Liberty Square. Despite the objections of Sam Eagle, The Great Gonzo has made sure to sneak his beloved chickens into both the “Declaration of Independence” and the “Paul Revere” versions of this show.

The fist Muppet chickens made their debut in 1972’s “The Muppet Musicians of Bremen,” one of Jim Henson’s “Tales From Muppetland” television specials which took place in rural Louisiana. When “The Muppet Show” first hit TV screens in 1976, the chickens were frequent members of the ensemble from the get-go, but their role in the show would become even larger after Gonzo first developed his unique infatuation toward poultry. Camilla in particular would stand out among her fellow chickens when she became Gonzo’s girlfriend, appearing alongside him not only in many episodes of “The Muppet Show” but many of the movies and specials that followed over the years. While they may mostly be background players in the Muppet world, Kermit’s band of weirdos just wouldn’t be the same without the semi-musical clicking of this fine feathered flock.

UPDATE: “The Muppets Present… Great Moments in American History” ceased regular performances in October 2019.
